inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Jakarta Regional Metropolitan Police revealed that many accidents were recorded from January 1-28, 2026. During this period, many accidents occurred due to potholes caused by recent extreme weather.
Superintendent Ojo Ruslani, Head of the Sub-Directorate of Law Enforcement at the Jakarta Regional Metropolitan Police Traffic Directorate, noted that throughout early 2026, dozens of traffic accidents were triggered by potholes. Of these incidents, one victim even died.
"Of the 27 incidents, one person died, eight people suffered serious injuries, and 20 others suffered minor injuries," explained Ojo, Thursday (1/29/2026).
He emphasized that road operators can be subject to criminal sanctions if proven negligent, as stipulated in Article 273 of Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Traffic and Road Transportation.
Under this provision, road operators who cause accidents resulting in minor injuries or vehicle damage face a maximum prison sentence of six months or a fine of up to IDR 12 million.
"If the negligence results in serious injuries, the penalty is one year in prison or a fine of IDR 24 million. If the accident results in death, the perpetrator faces up to five years in prison or a maximum fine of IDR 120 million," explained Ojo.
He urged the heads of traffic units within the Jakarta Regional Metropolitan Police to work together to immediately inventory and record damaged roads in their respective areas. Ojo also encouraged accelerated road repairs to prevent accidents and fatalities.
