Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. A powerful earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale, originating in the Northeast of the Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi, reverberated as far as the Philippines on Friday evening (8/3/2024).
According to analysis by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the tectonic earthquake's vibrations registered an intensity of III MMI around 5.11 pm local time, as reported by antaranews.com
Daryono, the Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center in Jakarta, said, "The tremors were felt from Talaud to the Mindanao region of the Philippines, with updated parameters indicating a magnitude of 6 and intensity scale of III MMI."
He explained that this medium-sized earthquake occurred due to deformations within the Philippine Sea Plate.
Analysis of the seismic source revealed a thrust fault mechanism.
Despite the event's intensity, no reports of damage have been received thus far. In addition, modeling projections until 5.50 pm local time showed no signs of aftershocks, and there was no tsunami risk associated with this earthquake.
