Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Health has recorded 99 Indonesian hajj pilgrims diagnosed with pneumonia while performing the pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, with one reported death due to acute respiratory infection.

Liliek Marhaendro Susilo, the Head of the Indonesian Hajj Health Center (KKHI), highlighted on Thursday (22/5/2025) the severity of pneumonia if not treated promptly, noting cases are spread across various groups and sectors. 

The affected pilgrims are currently receiving intensive care in referral hospitals in Mecca and Medina, as reported by antaranews.com.

Contributing factors include extreme heat with temperatures ranging between 41-47°C, dehydration, physical exhaustion from demanding pilgrimage rituals, overcrowding, and pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

The Ministry advises pilgrims to maintain hygiene by wearing masks, washing hands regularly, drinking sufficient fluids, and managing chronic conditions with medication. 

Pilgrims are also encouraged to conserve energy during peak rituals, avoid smoking in public, and promptly seek medical help if feeling unwell to ensure a safe and healthy pilgrimage.
