inp.polri.go.id - West Java. The West Java Regional Police's Special Criminal Investigation Directorate has successfully uncovered a formalin-laced noodle production operation in Garut, which used hazardous food additives.
During the raid, a man identified as WK was identified as a suspect for allegedly producing and distributing food that did not meet safety and quality standards.
The Head of Public Relations of the West Java Regional Police explained that the case was uncovered through a police report. Security personnel then conducted an investigation and identified the illegal production location.
"This discovery was made in a warehouse used as a chicken coop in Cirorek Hamlet, Karyamekar Village, Cilawu District, Garut Regency. Officers arrested one suspect identified as WK at the location," said Senior Superintendent Hendra on Saturday (2/21/2026).
The investigation revealed that suspect WK played an active role in the entire production process of the formalin-laced noodles. He allegedly instructed employees to mix hazardous chemicals such as formalin and borax into the noodle mixture.
The wet noodles containing formalin were then distributed to several shops and stalls at Ciawitali Market, Garut. This illegal practice was carried out to increase the noodles' shelf life, making them less likely to spoil and more chewy.
"The motive was to make the wet noodles last longer, be more chewy, and not spoil easily. However, borax and formalin are industrial chemicals that are very dangerous to health if consumed," he said.
Hendra explained that consuming borax and formalin carries serious risks to human health, including digestive disorders, kidney, liver, and nerve damage, and even cancer.
"The suspect has been detained, and we are continuing our investigation into the possibility of wider distribution. We will also coordinate with relevant agencies, such as the Health Office and the Trade Office, to monitor and take action against other hazardous food products," he concluded.
