inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) Marthinus Hukom emphasized that efforts to prevent and eradicate illegal drug trafficking in Indonesia must be carried out from the upstream, namely at the entry points of drugs into the country and the sources of the drugs.

He said that the rampant illegal drug trafficking in Indonesia cannot only be addressed through eradication or prevention domestically, which is the downstream part of the illegal drug business chain.

"Efforts to stop the illegal drug trafficking upstream are carried out by studying and collecting various data on illegal drug trafficking in areas that are the source of drugs entering Indonesia," said the Head of BNN, Thursday (4/10/2025).

One of the efforts to study and collect various data was carried out by Marthinus in a virtual meeting with the Regional Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, Jeremy Douglas, Tuesday (4/8/2025).

Marthinus and Jeremy, in the meeting, intensively discussed the drug crime situation in the region, especially the Golden Triangle, as well as the potential for possible cooperation in building information sources to understand drug trafficking in the region.

At the end of the meeting, the Head of the Indonesian National Narcotics Agency hoped to have further discussions with the UNODC Regional Representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

"I am interested in discussing further with you and the team directly regarding various issues of drug smuggling into Indonesia originating from the Golden Triangle area," he said.

Through these efforts, drugs originating from the Golden Triangle area are expected to be detected and secured more quickly before entering and being distributed illegally in Indonesia.

The Golden Triangle is a northern region in Southeast Asia that includes Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand, which is one of the largest opium producing areas in the world.
