Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) confirmed that 15 bodies have been recovered following a flash flood that struck a traditional gold mining area in Kampung Jim, Arfak Mountains, West Papua.
"A total of 15 bodies have been found between Sunday and Wednesday. Eight have been identified, while seven remain unidentified," said Abdul Muhari, the Head of BNPB's Data, Information and Communication Center, on Friday (23/5/2025).
Four people remain missing. A joint team involving the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the military, the police, and local residents continues search operations under challenging conditions. One survivor, Erik (25), was found safe in a nearby village.
The flood occurred around 9 pm local time after heavy rainfall lasted nearly seven hours. Strong currents swept through the miners' tents and equipment.
Extreme terrain, strong river currents, limited equipment, poor weather, and cold nighttime temperatures have hampered rescue efforts. U
