inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Head of Indonesian House of Representatives Puan Maharani stressed the importance of local farm products socialization and consumption to suppress the number of diabetes cases in children.
“The increase of diabetes cases in children demands extra monitoring from many parties, especially parents. The importance of local food socialization and consumption are also required to prevent children from diabetes,” said Puan on Wednesday (8/7/2024).
She considers that local farm products, such as cassava, can be the alternative amidst the many products of high sugar and ultra-processed food and drinks.
“Cassava is one of foods rich in carbohydrate and low glycemic index. It can be the alternative for those who want to avoid high blood pressure,” said Puan.
Puan notes that recent data shows that children are prone to diabetes nowadays, which greatly affects their life quality.
On the other hand, Puan also pushed the government to intensify education and socialization programs about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Other than help prevent diabetes, the step could also support local farmers in producing and distributing foods directly from the Indonesian soil.
