inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Head of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati says that the young generations are the ones who will feel the effects of climate changes. Thus, she urged the young generations to take concrete actions in combating climate changes.
“Gen Z and Alpha will be the generations that will feel the effect of climate change. However, I believe that these young people, whose number currently dominates the Indonesian population, can give a significant impact in combating climate changes,” says Dwikorita on Thursday (8/22/2024).
Recently, BMKG just recorded that 2023 as the hottest year with the global average temperature anomaly reaching 1.45 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times.
This number, says Dwikorita, almost hits the limit agreed in the Paris Agreement in 2015 that the world must hold the rate of global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius.
“Meanwhile WMO says that in 2050, in the worst case scenario, the world would not only be hit by hydrometeorology disasters, but also scarcity in waters which would result in a food crisis. Seeing the year, it would definitely be the Gen Z and Alpha who would feel the impact,” explains Dwikorita.
Meanwhile, the Deputy of Climatology, Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan says that climate change will continue to happen for several decades if the world does not immediately act.
According to him, the key to success in adapting and mitigating climate change is by improving their knowledge and awareness. What has become the challenge today is how to improve the awareness on climate change, particularly towards the young generations.
