inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono emphasized that the climate crisis is no longer a mere threat.

According to him, drought, flooding, and sea level rise are real warnings from nature that demand collective action from humanity.

"The climate crisis is no longer a mere threat, it is real. We can all see drought, flooding, and sea level rise as real signs from nature," he said, while attending the Indonesia International Sustainable Forum 2025 on Saturday (10/11/2025).

He explained that the acceleration of the clean energy transition is driving an increase in the need for critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt, and lithium. In fact, the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that demand for critical minerals will increase fourfold by 2040.

Interestingly, most of these resources are located in developing countries, including Indonesia. Which now has a great opportunity to play a significant role in the global green energy supply chain.

"This will bring both opportunity and responsibility to manage our resources wisely. To ensure fair value, and to promote sustainability that benefits all," he said.

Furthermore, the government emphasized its commitment to ensuring that the energy transition in Indonesia is fair, inclusive, and sustainable. In this regard, Indonesia has taken bold steps by utilizing the potential of critical minerals to support global decarbonization.

One way is through the downstreaming policy, the government seeks to create added value domestically. Namely, by building industry, developing workforce skills, and encouraging innovation to strengthen national independence.

"The implementation of zero emissions will be projected in 2026, by building 80,000 solar power plants. This will then provide up to 100 gigawatts of sustainable electricity," he explained.
