Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Defense announced on Friday (27/5/2026) that 100 Indonesian Navy personnel will be dispatched to Italy to undergo specialized training for the aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi.
This initial cohort represents the elite vanguard of a larger 500-member crew required to operate the vessel, which Indonesia is currently in the process of acquiring. The training aims to ensure seamless operational transition as the ship prepares for its journey to the archipelago.
"Approximately 100 personnel are scheduled for training in Italy, including hands-on experience during the vessel's voyage to Indonesia," said Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, the Defense Ministry Head of Information, as cited by antaranews.com
The Navy Chief of Staff Rear Admiral Yayan Sofiyan has said that operating a high-value asset like a carrier demands specific competencies beyond standard navigation. Beyond the core 500 sailors, the Navy must also prepare aviation crews and extensive shore-based infrastructure to support the massive logistical requirements of the fleet.
