Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian government is considering the development of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a strategic alternative to reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imported Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia announced the plan following a limited meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace on Monday (27/4/2026).
"The development of CNG is still under discussion and will be finalized," he said. "This serves as an alternative to strengthen energy independence within the LPG sector."
The Minister emphasized that utilizing domestic natural gas is essential for achieving national energy independence, according to antaranews.com.
The minister explained that while LPG production remains limited by domestic propane and butane supplies, CNG utilizes abundant local methane and ethane. State gas utility PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) is already expanding CNG infrastructure through "Gaslink" for industries and "Gasku" for transport. CNG is currently powering kitchen facilities for the government’s Free Nutritious Meal program in several cities.
