inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The government is targeting a fully operational national carbon market by the end of June 2026, with large-scale carbon trading expected to begin in July 2026.
Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, stated that this target is supported by the issuance of Presidential Regulation Number 110 of 2025 concerning the Implementation of Carbon Economic Value Instruments and National Greenhouse Gas Emission Control.
"Presidential Regulation 10 of 2025, which regulates and establishes this carbon market, is a game changer," said Special Envoy Hashim, Tuesday (2/3/2026).
The Presidential Regulation establishes the framework for implementing carbon economic value, including the mechanism for trading emissions and carbon credits, recording carbon units in the Carbon Unit Registration System (SRUK), preventing double counting, and linking domestic and international carbon markets.
Hashim stated that the government is currently finalizing the merger of several carbon registration systems so that all transactions are recorded within a single national system.
He explained that this integration is a key prerequisite for Indonesia's carbon market to operate according to international standards and gain the trust of global players.
"I can report today that all carbon markets will be operational by the end of June, and we hope to have trading underway by July," said Special Envoy Hashim.
According to him, the potential economic value of Indonesia's carbon market is considered significant, given the growing interest of international players in carbon credits, particularly those derived from natural resources.
He believes Indonesia has an advantage through its nature-based solutions approach, such as forests, mangroves, seagrass beds, and marine ecosystems, which are a major attraction for global carbon investors.
Hashim noted that various international meetings have shown a positive response to Indonesia's carbon policy after the government clarified its regulatory framework.
