Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that a 6.7-magnitude earthquake off the eastern coast of Hokkaido, Japan, does not pose a tsunami threat to Indonesia.
The quake struck on Friday, and was widely felt in northeastern Japan.
“The modeling results show this earthquake does not have the potential to generate a tsunami affecting Indonesian waters,” said BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Director Daryono on Saturday (13/12/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.
BMKG reported the quake occurred at coordinates 40.88° North and 142.76° East, about 290 kilometers southeast of Sapporo, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. It was caused by subduction activity between the Pacific Plate and the Okhotsk Plate with a thrust fault mechanism.
BMKG said there were no immediate reports of structural damage and that the event was part of a seismic sequence following a stronger 7.6-magnitude quake on December 8. Coastal communities were urged to remain calm and rely on official BMKG updates.
