Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai has emphasized that resolving the ongoing conflict in Papua necessitates a high-level national political decision and a holistic approach involving all sectors of the nation.

"Domestic and international records show an escalation. In nearly one month alone, no fewer than 20 people have died across five locations: Dogiyai, Yahukimo, Puncak Papua, Timika, and Tembagapura," he said on Sunday (10/5/2026), responding to reports from the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) regarding persistent violence in the region, including 97 incidents in 2025 and 26 cases recorded through April 2026.

Minister Pigai noted that in the age of rapid information technology, these incidents quickly draw global attention, impacting the international perception of Indonesia's human rights record. He argued that previous efforts have often focused on individual cases rather than addressing the root causes of the conflict.

The Minister asserted that a strategic national issue of this magnitude cannot be solved by a single ministry or agency. Instead, it requires a unified commitment from the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, as well as political parties and national figures, to find a sustainable and peaceful solution based on justice and human rights.
