inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq highlighted that Indonesia is now facing the potential impact of pressure on water resources that will affect food security and reduce the quality of life.
Minister of Environment Hanif said that the condition of Indonesia's water resources need to gain more attention due to its pressing matters. Data shows that the 2024 National Water Quality Index is at 54.78 or still below the national target of 55.5.
"The main challenge in ensuring access to clean water for all Indonesian people involves environmental, social, technical and governance issues that have not been well resolved," explained the Minister of Environment, Monday (6/16/2025).
Minister Hanif says that pressure on water resources has hampered the achievement of food and energy security, decreased health and environmental quality, access to clean water and increased hydrometeorological disasters.
Pressure mainly occurs in densely populated areas and centers of economic activity such as in the Java region.
Not only that, there is also an imbalance in water quality. With Java having a water utilization index of 0.27, balanced by the need for water for food of more than 30,000 million cubic meters per year.
On the other hand, the Papua region has a water utilization index of 1.89 indicating greater water availability with less than optimal utilization.
Moreover, Hanif also highlighted that vital rivers such as Citarum, Berantas, Musi and BatangHari have experienced a decline in quality in the last three years.
The data from the Ministry of Environment shows that around 60 percent of rivers in Indonesia are polluted due to domestic and industrial waste to plastic waste in water bodies.
This is compounded by the threat of climate change.
"Although Indonesia does not have glaciers, we still have to pay attention to the impacts of climate change that are occurring throughout the world, which can also threaten the water resources that we have in Indonesia," explained the Minister of Environment.
