President Prabowo Subianto announced that Indonesia and Brazil have agreed to begin negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), following a bilateral meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the Merdeka Palace on Thursday (23/10/2025).
“We have agreed to move toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, similar to those we’ve established with the EU and Canada. Brazil, as the current president of Mercosur, supports this initiative,” he said in a joint statement with President Lula, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The leaders also witnessed the signing of eight memorandums of understanding (MoUs) across key sectors in mining, energy, science, technology, and trade worth over USD 5 billion. The agreements involve major entities such as Indonesian energy company PT Pertamina, electricity company PT PLN, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), and Brazil’s JBS and Fluxus.
President Prabowo said that Indonesia and Brazil represent rising Global South economies and pledged to deepen cooperation “in all fields to strengthen our strategic partnership.”
