Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Nasir warned of emerging threats to global water security during the Fourth High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development,” held May 25–28 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
He cited rising demand from mineral extraction, artificial intelligence infrastructure, data centers, and the digital industry, which consume billions of liters of water daily.
“A new underestimated threat is emerging,” Deputy Minister Arrmanatha said, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday (28/5/2026), according to antaranews.com.
He stressed that water is an invisible resource driving the digital economy and could become a major global crisis if not managed strategically.
Indonesia has established a Center of Excellence for Water and Climate Resilience since the 2024 World Water Forum in Bali, training over 2,000 participants from 40 Asia-Pacific countries. The country also initiated the UN General Assembly resolution on World Lake Day and placed water infrastructure at the core of national strategic financing.
