Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Affairs has secured 2,460 locations nationwide to facilitate social work sentences for minor offenders under Indonesia’s new Criminal Code.
Minister Agus Andrianto announced on Tuesday (3/2/2026) that these sites include schools, government offices, houses of worship, and social shelters. The initiative is a significant shift toward restorative justice, allowing low-level offenders to serve their communities through cleaning and maintenance activities rather than facing traditional incarceration.
"As an initial step for implementing social work, we have prepared 1,174 cooperation agreements with various cross-sectoral partners," Minister Agus said during a hearing with Commission XIII of the House of Representatives (DPR), as cited by antaranews.com.
The ministry has established partnerships with 517 local administrations and over 300 state agencies to manage these service locations. To ensure operational synergy, the government is coordinating with the Supreme Court to streamline sentencing guidelines for minor crimes.
This strategic expansion is designed to maximize the efficacy of the new Criminal Code while reducing the burden on the national prison system by prioritizing social contribution over jail time for eligible offenders.
