Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia and Singapore have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on cross-border Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects aimed at achieving net zero emissions by 2050, an official said on Thursday (15/2/2024).
Jodi Mahardi, the Deputy for Maritime Sovereignty and Energy at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, said that the initiative positions Indonesia as a significant player in the Southeast Asian CCS landscape, introducing a model of cross-border environmental cooperation.
Keith Tan, the Deputy Secretary (Industry) of Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry, described cross-border CCS as an emerging solution in Asia, supporting Singapore's transition to a low-carbon future.
He said that Singapore is the first nation to formalize such an agreement with Indonesia following the announcement of its presidential regulation on cross-border CCS.
The LOI indicates the importance of CCS as a decarbonization tool, emphasizing its potential to support sustainable industrial practices and create new economic prospects.
A joint working group comprising officials from both countries will collaborate to establish a binding bilateral agreement, enabling the cross-border transportation and storage of carbon dioxide between Indonesia and Singapore.
