Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia will soon discuss the transfer of Serge Atlaoui, a French national on death row for drug offenses, with the French government.

“We’ve received a formal request from France’s Ministry of Justice. Talks with the French ambassador, delayed due to my schedule, are planned for next week,” said Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra on Tuesday (3/12/2024).

The case follows a framework similar to recent transfers of Mary Jane Veloso to the Philippines and Bali Nine members to Australia. Humanitarian grounds, particularly Atlaoui’s health issues, will be considered.

“If France agrees to our conditions, the transfer could happen this December,” the minister said, as quoted by antaranews.com..

Under Indonesian conditions, transferred prisoners must continue their sentences abroad. France would also need to respect Indonesia’s court rulings. The reciprocal agreement ensures similar treatment for Indonesian nationals detained overseas.

Atlaoui was convicted in 2005 for operating a drug lab in Tangerang. His multiple clemency pleas have been rejected.
