Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Chairman of the National Economic Council (DEN) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said that Indonesia is evaluating the potential benefits and risks of importing oil from Russia.
Following Indonesia's recent entry into the BRICS alliance (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), the country could access Russian oil at significantly reduced prices.
"If it benefits Indonesia, we can consider it. If we save $20 or $22 per barrel, why not?" Luhut remarked during a press conference on Thursday (9/1/2025), emphasizing a cautious approach to this matter.
Economist Achmad Nur Hidayat highlighted that BRICS membership could help Indonesia address its oil and gas trade deficit. Russia, as a major oil producer, offers discounted rates due to Western sanctions.
While cheaper oil prices are advantageous, challenges remain, including limited access to global payment systems like SWIFT.
Achmad urged transparent and cautious cooperation to mitigate risks while prioritizing national interests and long-term energy diversification.
