inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan says the Indonesian policy on renewable energy will be similar to other countries as there are factors that need to be considered.
“We do not want to make a policy that would disturb our economic growth and we want to make sure the policy is enjoyed by our people. Therefore, our policy on renewable energy cannot completely follow those implemented by the developed states,” says Luhut on Thursday (9/5/2024).
He gives an example on how Indonesia has a huge asset in handling climate change, including potential in storing carbon emissions of around 600 gigatons through Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).
Not only that, Indonesia also has a mangrove ecosystem of 3.3 million hectares that has the capability to store greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions not only above the surface, but also below the surface.
He explains that Indonesia's per capita emissions are also lower than those of developed countries, with a record of 2 tons per capita of carbon emissions compared to 14-15 tons per capita for the United States.
With those potentials, Luhut says Indonesia can reach the zero emissions goal faster than the initial target of 2060 by collaborating with various parties.
