Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The construction team of the Indonesian Hospital in the besieged Palestinian Gaza Strip has strongly denied Israel's accusation of the existence of a tunnel under the medical facility.
"Israel's accusation of a tunnel under the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza is completely untrue," the head of the construction team, Farid Thalid, said in Jakarta on Monday (6/11/2023).
The accusation was made after several photos surfaced claiming the existence of a tunnel under the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza, he said. An Israeli press release accused the alleged tunnel was a place suspected of supporting the movement of a Palestinian freedom fighter group.
Thalid said that the Indonesian hospital in Gaza, which was built with donations from all Indonesians, was established solely for the Palestinian humanitarian mission. It is now is the only operating hospital for Palestinians in northern Gaza to receive medical treatment.
According to the latest data from MER-C Indonesia, the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza is currently treating five thousand Palestinian civilians in Gaza after Israel bombed the overcrowded enclave, which is home to more than two million people, after the military wing of Hamas, which rules Gaza, attacked Israel on 7 October.
The hospital was forced to treat the patients in its car part due to over capacity.
Thalid, who is also a member of the presidium of the Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C) Indonesia, said his organization would coordinate with the Indonesian foreign ministry to seek accountability from those who spread the allegation.
"Whatever happens, the hospital must not be disrupted on humanitarian grounds," he stressed.
Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has repeatedly called on Israel to stop killing civilians and targeting civilian facilities such as hospitals, mosques and churches.
