Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, the Chief of Indonesian National Police (INP), has instructed the INP Traffic Corps to intensify efforts in educating the public about the upcoming merit point system designed to curb traffic violations.
"I have received reports that, alongside the Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE), the Head of INP Traffic Corps and his team will develop what is called 'the merit system', which assigns points or marks to existing traffic violations," the INP Chief stated while addressing the 68th anniversary of the INP Traffic Corps in Serpong, Tangerang on Tuesday (25/9/2023)
He said that detailed information regarding the point reduction system for traffic violators has already been disseminated, including instances where violations are captured by ETLE cameras. The issued ticket contains an explanation of the offense, outlining its potential to lead to point deductions, ultimately influencing the potential revocation of the driver's license.
"This can be socialized because our hope is not to give points, but to encourage greater compliance with traffic regulations," the general said as reported by antaranews.com
Brigadier General Aan Suhanan, Director of Law Enforcement of INP Traffic Corps, underscored that the merit point system aims to deter repeat traffic violations.
He said that each driver begins with an allocation of 12 points, subject to deductions ranging from one point for minor infractions to five points for severe violations. Drivers reaching zero points face license revocation and must undergo the driving test anew. In specific cases, such as hit-and-run incidents, immediate license suspension is mandated by the court.
Since late 2022, several Regional Police units, including Central Java Regional Police, have already implemented the merit point system.
