Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has been conducting a second phase of Weather Modification Operations (OMC) from 13 to 16 December 2024 to mitigate heavy rainfall predicted by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
BPBD Secretary Maruli said on Friday (13/12/2024) that the operation aims to redistribute rainfall and minimize flood risks.
The first phase, conducted 7 to 9 December2024, reduced rainfall intensity by up to 42%. However, localized heavy rain, upstream flows, and potential tidal flooding remain concerns, according to antaranews.com..
BMKG attributes the increased rainfall to atmospheric factors, including the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), a developing cyclone in the Indian Ocean, and monsoon winds from Asia. Peak rainfall, expected on 13 and 14 December 2024, is forecasted to range from moderate to heavy.
OMC employs aircraft to disperse cloud-seeding materials such as salt and quicklime (CaO) to control cloud formation. Operations are coordinated from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base and Curug, Tangerang.
BPBD has coordinated with BMKG, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), and other agencies.
“Interagency collaboration is key. We are ready for multiple flights daily to mitigate flood risks,” said Weather Modification Director Endarwin.
