Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) Papua has called on Polda Papua Barat to swiftly and transparently investigate the shooting of a local resident, which occurred on 17 July 2024.
Frits Ramandey, the Head of Komnas HAM Papua, stressed on Wednesday (7/8/2024) the need for a thorough, fair, and professional investigation into the incident. He urged for the immediate arrest of the suspects and the identification of the primary gunman, who shot the victim, identified as YCW, a resident of Manokwari.
Melchior Weriun, the Chair of Komnas HAM Papua’s Human Rights Enforcement and Promotion Division, suggested the shooting might be linked to YCW’s role as a legal representative in a murder case, impacting human rights defense activities.
Frits called for an investigation into the distribution of mourning news related to the shooting and requested local government and police to ensure the protection of YCW and his family.
He encouraged the West Papua administration to ensure the safety of Manokwari residents, particularly those involved in human rights advocacy. Frits alsohe urged the public to support the police in their legal efforts.
