Inp.polri.go.id - Bandung. West Java health laboratory confirmed Salmonella and Bacillus cereus as the main causes of food poisoning that sickened more than 1,300 students in West Bandung regency last week.
“Our examination showed the presence of decaying bacteria, namely Salmonella and Bacillus cereus, originating from carbohydrate components in the food,” said Dr. Ryan Bayusantika Ristandi, the Head of Labkesda West Java, on Sunday (28/9/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.
The bacteria were found in samples from the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program. Dr. Ryan explained contamination was likely caused by delays between food preparation and serving, allowing bacteria to multiply.
He stressed strict hygiene in food handling, from using clean water to ensuring kitchen staff wear gloves and proper attire. To prevent spoilage, food should be kept above 60°C or below 5°C.
The West Java Health Office urged all nutrition service units (SPPG) kitchens to strengthen food safety protocols. In West Bandung alone, 1,333 students were affected, with hundreds more reported in Garut.
