Inp.polri.go.id - Medan. A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck off the southwest coast of Simeulue, Aceh, Indonesia, on Saturday evening (23/8/2025) at 7.24 pm local time, was linked to subduction activity along the Sumatra Megathrust, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
“The modeling results show that this earthquake does not have tsunami potential,” said BMKG’s Director of Earthquake and Tsunami, Daryono, in a statement, as quoted by antaranews.com.
BMKG located the epicenter at 2.00°N and 96.46°E, about 53 kilometers southeast of Sinabang, at a depth of 20 kilometers. The quake was characterized by a thrust-fault mechanism. Shaking was felt in Simeulue at intensity IV MMI and in Nias Utara, Gunung Sitoli, Subulussalam, and Aceh Selatan at intensity III MMI.
BMKG confirmed no aftershocks as of 7.45 pm local time. Residents were urged to remain calm, avoid damaged buildings, and rely only on verified official updates from BMKG.
