Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced that a 5.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the Banda Sea, Maluku, on Monday night does (22/7/2024) not pose a tsunami threat.
BMKG's Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, confirmed that the earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 98 kilometers, was caused by intra-slab subduction activity in the Banda Sea.
The epicenter was located approximately 183 kilometers west of Tual, Maluku, or 372 kilometers southeast of Ambon, according to antaranews.com.
The quake caused tremors felt in Teor, Wakate, and Pulau Gorom, with intensity levels of III - IV MMI, but no damage has been reported. BMKG's analysis confirmed that the earthquake's strike-slip mechanism does not generate tsunami potential.
BMKG advises residents to remain calm and rely on official information, which can be accessed through the infoBMKG app, social media, or local BMKG offices.
