Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Mexico has officially imposed import tariffs of up to 35 percent on products from Asian countries, including Indonesia, starting January 1, 2026, as part of a policy to protect domestic industries and jobs, the Mexican Ministry of Economy announced in Mexico City.
“The measure aims to safeguard sensitive sectors and strengthen Mexico’s industrial capacity,” the ministry said in a statement, as reported by antaranews.com on Wednesday (31/12/2025).
The tariffs apply to 1,463 products across sectors such as automotive, textiles, steel, plastics, footwear, furniture, and household appliances, targeting countries without free trade agreements with Mexico, including China, India, South Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia. Mexican authorities said the policy is intended to protect around 350,000 jobs, boost local content in supply chains, and support sovereign and sustainable reindustrialization.
The decision, approved by Congress, is expected to take effect nationwide. Indonesia’s government has stated the policy will not significantly affect its exports and does not plan to pursue negotiations.
