Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia will not be affected by Mexico’s decision to impose a 50 percent import tariff on selected products, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said on Friday (12/12/2025).
The policy targets goods entering the Mexican market and does not directly involve Indonesian trade flows, as Indonesia has limited economic dependence on Mexico.
Minister Airlangga stressed that the tariff applies solely to imports into Mexico.
“It applies to goods entering Mexico, so it does not affect Indonesia,” he said, as quoted by antaranews.com.
Given the minimal exposure, the Indonesian government has no plan to open negotiations with Mexico regarding the policy, he added.
Mexico’s Senate approved the bill on Wednesday, with the tariff set to take effect on 1 January 2025. The measure covers more than 1,400 product lines, including automobiles, auto parts, textiles, apparel, steel, plastics, footwear, and household appliances.
The higher tariff mainly impacts countries without a free trade agreement with Mexico, including Indonesia.
