Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology Nadiem Makarim has expressed his appreciation for the Central Jakarta Sub-Regional Police's quick response to the fire at the National Museum on Jalan Merdeka Barat, Central Jakarta, on Saturday (16/9/2023) evening.
"My greatest appreciation, both to the police, and of course from the firefighters who were also extraordinarily quick to arrive and managed to isolate the fire behind Building A," he said to the media in Jakarta, on Sunday(17/9/2023).
Minister Nadiem said that the fire could have spread to other buildings, but it was strategically stopped and immediately extinguished, expressing gratitude that there were no reports of casualties or injuries in this incident.
"Our main priority now is to save as many artifacts or historical objects as possible in the rooms affected by this fire," he said, adding that his ministry has coordinated to create a joint team of museum teams and experts who will work together with the police and firefighters to ensure the recording of damage to the historical objects.
The National Museum is renowned as one of Indonesia's best and a top-tier institution in Southeast Asia. It houses an extensive collection of around 141,000 items, spanning prehistoric artifacts, archaeology, numismatics, ceramics, ethnography, history, and geography.
Fire started to engulf four rooms at Building A of the National Museum at around 8 pm on Saturday and it was put off at around 10 pm by the Central Jakarta Fire and Rescue Department. The Central Jakarta Sub-regional Police has deployed 180 personnel to secure the site, which is categorized as a state asset.
