The Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar, expressed his deep condolences on the passing of Suryadharma Ali, the former Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia for the 2009–2014 period, on Thursday at 4:18 a.m. at Mayapada Hospital, Jakarta.
"Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un. I, on behalf of myself and the extended family of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, express my deepest condolences on the passing of Suryadharma Ali," said the Minister of Religious Affairs, as reported by Antaranews, Thursday (7/31/25).
The Minister of Religious Affairs remembered the deceased as a dedicated figure in strengthening national religious governance.
During his tenure as Minister of Religious Affairs, Suryadharma Ali was known for his active participation in strengthening religious institutions, improving educational services in madrasas (Islamic schools) and Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), and implementing various bureaucratic reform efforts within the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
"He played a key role in modernizing the implementation of the Hajj pilgrimage, including the digitalization of Hajj services, which laid the foundation for the transformation of the Hajj today," said the Minister of Religion.
Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin also served as Vice Minister of Religious Affairs during Suryadharma Ali tenure. He also invited all levels of the Ministry of Religious Affairs to perform the absentee prayer and send best wishes for the deceased.
