Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. U.S. President Donald Trump has decided to maintain a 32% import tariff on goods from Indonesia, sticking to the reciprocal tariff rate announced in April 2025, despite ongoing intensive negotiations between both countries.
“Starting August 1, 2025, we will impose a 32% Tariff on all Indonesian products shipped to the United States, separate from other sectoral tariffs,” he wrote in an official letter, addressed to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and posted in full on his social media account.
President Trump justified the move by citing the United States’ long-standing trade deficit with Indonesia, saying the tariff is “far less than what is needed to eliminate the disparity.”
He warned Indonesia against retaliating with tariffs of its own, stating that any such move would be met with additional tariffs equal to the retaliation amount plus the 32% base tariff.
However, President Trump offered an alternative Indonesian businesses could avoid the tariffs entirely by relocating production to the U.S., with promises of fast-tracked approvals for investments.
The tariff could be adjusted, he added, if Indonesia takes steps to open its domestic market and adjust trade policies in favor of American access.
President Trump’s letters to Indonesia and several other Southeast Asian leaders, including those of Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Thailand, were publicly posted online. .
