inp.polri.go.id - Kupang. The East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Regional Police has successfully uncovered the Human Trafficking Case which involves three people who smuggled a victim to Batam.
The victim, INWL (19), was successfully rescued by the police after being exploited as a housemaid without receiving salary.
The case began when the victim left her house in Kotabes Village, Kupang Regency, in November 2024 after she found a job via Facebook social media. The victim then contacted suspect OAN, who offered her a housekeeping job in Batam with a salary of IDR 2.6 million to IDR 2.8 million per month.
On November 21, 2024, she met OAN in Oesapa, Kupang City. After she was interviewed virtually by JY, who was in Batam, INWL then stayed at OAN house before she was sent to Batam the following day by plane.
Upon her arrival at Batam, she was picked up by JY and DW who then placed her at her workplace. However, INWL was treated poorly at her workplace, receiving abuse and even not getting paid by JY, her employer.
After withstanding the abuse for several months, INWL successfully contacted her family on February 5, 2025. Responding to the report from her family, police then carried out the rescue operation.
"We have sent a team led by Police Senior Inspector Yance Kadiaman to Batam on February 10, 2025. As a result, on February 11, 2025, suspects JY and DW were successfully secured and detained at the Riau Islands Regional Police. Furthermore, on February 14, they were taken to the NTT Regional Police for further legal proceedings," said Senior Superintendent Henry Novika Chandra, the Head of NTT Regional Police Public Relations when confirmed on Thursday (2/20/2025).
The suspects were charged with Article 2 Paragraph (1) and Article 10 of Law Number 21 of 2007 concerning the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Human Trafficking, with a minimum sentence of 3 years and a maximum of 15 years in prison.
The Head of Public Relations of the NTT Regional Police appealed to the public to be more careful of job offers that promise large salaries, especially if they do not go through official procedures.
