Inp.polri.go.id - Depok. Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said on Monday (26/8/2025) that the government allows citizens to voice their demands during a protest outside the House of Representatives (DPR).
“We never ban demonstrations. Go ahead and express your aspirations, even if that means calling for the dissolution of DPR or the People’s Consultative Assembly,” he said, as reported by antaranews.com
Minister Yusril underlined that in a democracy, demands may be voiced so long as public order and the law are respected.
The protest, staged by a group calling itself the Indonesian People’s Revolution, demanded the dissolution of DPR, rejection of amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code, and cancellation of salary increases for lawmakers.
By midday, police deployed water cannons as clashes broke out outside the DPR complex. Inside, lawmakers continued their session, with Deputy Speaker Dave Laksono saying that legislators’ duties must proceed “despite the heated atmosphere.”
