inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Political observer Boni Hargens believes the Indonesian National Police (INP) is demonstrating a better humane approach in handling large-scale protests in June 2026.
He emphasized that those steps are crucial prerequisites for the government to implement policies relevant to the community's conditions.
"A better humane and democratic approach of the police institution is a key factor in enabling the massive demonstrations to proceed under control without a significant escalation of violence," Boni explained in a written statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday (6/16/2026).
Boni said police's measured approach reflects a balance between upholding public order and respecting civil rights.
He stated that these two values do not have to be in conflict in a democratic country, as democratic politics always opens up space and values criticism to enrich policymakers' information.
Boni expressed confidence in the police's ability to maintain public order and security amidst the escalating demonstrations in mid-June 2026.
"It is indeed the democratic right of citizens to protest. However, we must also fairly acknowledge that the government is working hard to overcome the difficulties that have arisen as a result of the current conflicting and unstable global geopolitics," he said.
Boni further added that the current global situation is forcing many countries to adapt to maintain domestic economic stability. Indonesia is no different from other countries struggling with the uncertainty of the world order.
Based on external pressures from these geopolitical dynamics, he believes the government needs to be given space to work, even amidst public criticism.
