Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesian National Police (INP) Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo emphasized that the police presence during public demonstrations is intended to guarantee safety and order, not to restrict citizens’ rights.
He made the remarks virtually at a public dialogue on freedom of expression in Jakarta on Monday (29/9/2025), as reported by antaranews.com.
“Democratic space must remain alive, but it cannot become an opening for actions that hinder the nation’s progress,” Chief SIgit said.
He stressed that the police prioritize a humanistic approach, relying on dialogue and communication with stakeholders to listen to public aspirations.
The police chief acknowledged that peaceful demonstrations are often infiltrated by provocateurs, leading to riots, property damage, and casualties.
He said the force is committed to protecting other citizens’ rights while adhering to human rights principles. The police follow strict operational guidelines, including regulations on the use of force and riot management, and increasingly apply restorative justice in handling cases.
