inp.polri.go.id - Tanjung Selor. The Nunukan Sub-regional Police , North Kalimantan (Kaltara), provided legal counseling to prospective Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) in order to increase legal awareness and provide maximum protection for them.

"This activity is to ensure that prospective PMI fully understand the legal procedures before deciding to work abroad," said Head of Public Relations of the North Kalimantan Regional Police, Senior Superintendent Budi Rachmat in a statement quoted by Antaranews, Tanjung Selor, Tuesday (6/3/2025).

According to him, this is also a vital step to prevent criminal acts of human trafficking (TPPO) and detrimental labor exploitation practices.

He explained that the socialization with the theme "Requirements and Documents to Become an Indonesian Migrant Worker" thoroughly examines the various mandatory documents that must be fulfilled.

"Starting from ID Card, passport, work visa, health certificate, official work contract, to documents from the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI)," he said.

He said the requirements are regulated in Article 11 Paragraph 2 of Government Regulation Number 4 of 2013 concerning Procedures for the Placement of Indonesian Migrant Workers Abroad by the Government.

In addition, there are stages that must be passed by PMI so that their immigration status is valid, which include recruitment, psychological and health examinations, signing of PMI placement, passport management, and PMI insurance.

"If these stages are not met, the placement process can be considered illegal. And, parties who send workers without official procedures can be subject to immigration crimes," he said.

The Nunukan Sub-regional Police also invite all levels of society to play an active role. If there are suspicious or non-procedural recruitment activities, report them to officers.

According to him, with this massive socialization, prospective PMI are believed to be more legally literate and understand the importance of following the correct procedures.

"So that PMI are legally protected and avoid various risks when working abroad. The police are fully committed to continuing to monitor and reduce the number of legal violations related to illegal migrant workers," he said.
