inp.polri.go.id - Kupang. Bad weather has struck a ship in the waters of the Sawu Sea. In the incident, the Helewa Ship was having an engine failure and water ingress due to high waves and strong winds. Fortunately, all nine crew members were safely evacuated following a quick response of the NTT Regional Police's Marine and Air Police Directorate along with other authorities.

The Head of Public Relations of the NTT Regional Police, Senior Superintendent Henry Novika Chandra confirmed the rescue efforts on Monday (11/17/2025).

"Our personnel received reports from the public that a ship experienced engine failure amidst extreme weather. The team immediately moved to the Bolok Ferry Port to provide assistance," said Henry Novika Chandra.

Before arriving in Kupang, the Helewa crew was helped by the crews of Lakaan ship which was passing from Aimere to Kupang. The crews of Lakaan found Helewa was in worrying condition and about to sink due to water ingress.

"This is a great stroke of luck. Lakaan crossed on time and successfully brought the entire crew to a safer location," explained Henry.

Upon arrival in Kupang, the police and other maritime agencies were already on standby at Bolok Port, preparing ambulances and medical personnel to ensure that all crew members received health support.

The rescue operation involved the collaboration between the NTT Regional Police, the Kupang Search and Rescue Office, the Kupang Maritime Security Agency, and the NTT Regional Police's Health and Medical Unit.

The rescue equipment deployed included a 2005 Patrol Boat, a RIB, communication equipment, and a Ditpolairud ambulance.

"This proves our preparation and optimal coordination with the maritime agencies in handling emergency situations. In handling this rescue operation, we can confirm that there were no fatalities," said Henry.

In his closing statement, he also urged fishermen and shippers to always pay attention to weather information from the BMKG, considering the potential for high waves and extreme weather that could still occur in the NTT region.
