Inp.polri.go.id - Batam. The Barelang City Sub-regional police have found indications of criminal wrongdoing in the deadly fire that engulfed the MT Federal II vessel under repair at PT ASL Marine Shipyard Batam, killing 14 workers and injuring 17 others.
The Barelang City Police have officially launched a criminal investigation into the case, Barelang City Police Chief Senior Superintendent Zaenal Arifin on Wednesday (29/10/2025)..
Police are now determining who bears responsibility for the incident. Investigators have questioned 43 witnesses, including management from PT ASL Marine Shipyard, subcontractors, and officials from the local manpower office.
Riau Regional Police Chief Inspector General Asep Safrudin confirmed the probe continues pending forensic results from Riau.
He stressed the case has drawn national attention regarding workplace safety.
“Strict adherence to standard operating procedures is crucial to protect workers and prevent similar tragedies,” Chief Asep said, noting the need to boost local workforce competence.
