Inp.polri.go.id - London. President Prabowo Subianto concluded a landmark visit to the United Kingdom on Wednesday, securing a £4 billion (around Rp 90 trillion) investment commitment centered on Indonesia's maritime sector.
The deal, spearheaded by British defense firm Babcock, focuses on the construction and assembly of 1,582 fishing vessels, a strategic move to revitalize Indonesia's domestic shipbuilding industry and modernize its aging fleet.
"This program is projected to employ approximately 600,000 people because the production and assembly will take place entirely in Indonesia," Cabinet Secretary Lieutenant Colonel Teddy Indra Wijaya said on Wednesday (21/1/2026), as cited by antaranews.com.
The partnership, solidified following talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street, is expected to generate 30,000 maritime crew positions and 400,000 manufacturing jobs.
Prime Minister Starmer praised the "Maritime Partnership Programme," noting its role in fostering high-tech industrial growth for both nations. By localizing production, the initiative aims to enhance national maritime security, boost the welfare of fishing communities, and strengthen Indonesia’s industrial capacity through direct technology transfer.
