Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai asserted that the government responded to recent demonstrations in line with human rights principles, earlier than the call issued by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
“Too late. Indonesia had already taken steps three days before the OHCHR spokesperson spoke,” he said on Tuesday (2/9/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.
OHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani urged Indonesia to ensure an immediate, transparent investigation into alleged abuses during protests linked to lawmakers allowances, emphasizing international rights standards.
Minister Pigai explained that President Prabowo Subianto expressed concern on 29 August 2025, one day after a police armored vehicle killed a raid-hailing taxi driver, Affan Kurniawan.
The President condemned excessive police action, sanctioned those responsible, and personally visited the victim’s family, pledging state support. On 31 August 2025, Prabowo reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), stressing freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and due process.
