Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. The Chief of Intan Jaya Sub-regional Police, Superintendent Afrizal Asri, said that the current threat posed by the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) has created fear among airline operators, preventing flights to Sugapa, the capital of Intan Jaya Regency in Central Papua.
"Due to the looming threat of KKB gunfire, no flights have operated to Sugapa today," he said on Monday (22/1/2024).
Speaking from Jayapura, Chief Afrizal acknowledged that the Acting Regent of Intan Jaya would convene a meeting with the Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda) to address the issue, antaranews.com reported.
The meeting, held in Nabire, aims to formulate strategies in response to the escalating situation.
Chief Afrizal admitted that the operations at Bilorai Airport in Sugapa are weather-dependent and can facilitate up to 20 flights on clear days. Flights to Bilorai usually originate from Nabire and Timika, deploying small-bodied aircraft.
On Sunday, the KKB in Intan Jaya has issued warnings to Timika and Nabire flight passengers, urging them to refrain from flying to Bilorai Airport in Sugapa, threatening to open fire.
This development follows the KKB's attack on the security post in Sugapa on Friday (19/1/2024), resulting in the death of police officer member First Brigadier (posthumpus) Alfando Steve Karamoy and civilian Yusak Sondegau.
