Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck Sarmi, Papua, at 2.14 pm local time on Thursday (16/10/2025), the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.
Authorities said the quake poses no tsunami threat but urged residents to remain alert for potential aftershocks.
“Aftershocks may occur because this was a shallow earthquake. Tremors were felt strongly in Sarmi and surrounding areas, reaching Wamena and Jayapura, with intensity up to V MMI, causing light structural damage in some buildings,” said Herlambang Hudha, the Head of BMKG Jayapura, as reported by antaranews.com
BMKG identified the quake as shallow, linked to movement along the Mamberamo Fault, with an upward thrust mechanism.
Local officials are advised to conduct field surveys to assess community safety and infrastructure impacts. Residents are urged to stay calm, avoid damaged buildings, and gather in open areas if aftershocks occur.
