inp.polri.go.id - The shooting of former prime minister Shinzo Abe really shocked Japan. This is because the Land of the Rising Sun has been the country with the lowest firearm crime rate in the world. Abe was shot three times which some hits him in the neck and through the heart by Yamagami Tetsuya, a former member of the Japanese Navy during a campaign speech in Nara City, Friday (8/7). The Longest Serving Japanese Prime Minister was declared dead after being in a critical condition and bleeding profusely. Emergency officials said Abe had shown no signs of life or vital signs after experiencing cardiac arrest after being shot. So far, gun-related crimes are very rare in Japan because the government enforces a very strict gun control laws. In 2018, Japan reported only nine deaths from firearm crimes. In the same year, 39,740 shootings occurred in the United States, according to CNN. Under Japanese law, the only weapons that are allowed to be widely sold are air rifles. Meanwhile, pistol-type weapons are prohibited. Even so, it is very difficult for a citizen to still be able to buy and own firearms because they have to go through a long and complicated process. As of 2019, only about 310,400 guns were held by Japanese civilians in a country of 125 million total inhabitants. One of the major gun incidents occurred in 2007. At that time, the Deputy Mayor of Nagasaki City, Iccho Ito died after being shot at least twice in the back by a suspected Yakuza gang member. Since then, Japan has increasingly tightened its Gun Control Law and imposed tougher penalties on gun criminals and members of organized criminal gangs.
