inp.polri.go.id - Spanish police announced the seizure of six tonnes of marijuana after dismantling an illegal plantation near Barcelona on Thursday (7/7). The amount of marijuana seized is the largest in Spanish history.
During the operation, police seized "more than six tonnes of cannabis, among which was 3.5 tonnes of buds that was hidden in vacuum-packed thermal bags," the National Police of Spanish and the Guardian Civilian Police said in a joint statement.
The investigation began in March 2021 when investigators discovered a 32-hectare plot in Vilassar de Mar, about 30 kilometers (18 miles) on the coast from Barcelona that was used to grow hemp, or the cannabis plant, on an industrial scale.
But signs are posted around the site indicating a violation has occurred. Police quickly realized that it was being used for large-scale cannabis cultivation.
Police said thousands of crops were grown in different warehouses and greenhouses, all closely monitored by more than 100 cameras.
The site, which also illegally utilizes the power grid, has been operating since at least 2018.
The police has arrested five people, and charged with crimes against public health and electricity fraud.
They also found 17 kilograms of marijuana resin, which the gang began to produce.
After decades as the gateway for Moroccan cannabis to enter Europe, Spain is now a center for cannabis production with the number of illegal plantations doubling. It attracts criminal gangs from all over the continent.
