inp.polri.go.id - Bandung City. The West Java Regional Police revealed that the tear gas fired around Bandung Islamic University (Unisba) on Monday was triggered by a Molotov cocktail attack by a group of people dressed in black who are suspected of being an anarchist group.
Head of Public Relations for the West Java Regional Police, Senior Superintendent Hendra Rochmawan, said the incident began when a large-scale joint Indonesian National Military (TNI)/Indonesian National Police (INP) patrol passed through the Jalan Tamansari area, Bandung City.
"At the same time, a group of people dressed in black appeared, suspected to be an anarchist group. They were the ones who initially blocked the road and set up a blockade in Tamansari, acting anarchically," Hendra said in Bandung on Tuesday (9/2/2025).
Hendra explained that the group then further provoked the crowd by throwing Molotov cocktails from inside the campus at officers and vehicles. In response, officers fired tear gas into the roadway.
"The team then fired tear gas onto the highway, but it was blown away by the wind and into the Unisba parking lot. This was then used as provocation by the anarchist group to clash students with officers," he said.
He emphasized that information on social media that said officers entered the campus, carrying rubber bullets, and firing tear gas into the campus area was not true.
"The distance between the officers and the campus was approximately 200 meters from the Unisba campus. There were no tear gas shots directed at the campus, all of which were directed towards the main road, where the group dressed in black had gathered," he said.
