inp.polri.go.id – On the 76th anniversary of Bhayangkara, there was a statement by the Deputy Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Wakapolri), Commissioner General Dr. Gatot Eddy Promono MSi, who is very interesting and reflective. "The National Police (Polri) are different from political parties (Parpol) and political officials who use public opinion as the main reference in their work. For political parties and political officials, public opinion and media coverage are very important, because they will affect their popularity and electability," said Wakapolri. Why is this statement reflective is because it coincides with the 76th Anniversary of the Police. It is clear that the Police are getting more mature and richer in experience. The Indonesian police, are the police in the world's third largest democracy. In a democratic country, the Police must be firm with the constitution and the law as stated by Wakapolri. Without a firm grip on the constitution, Polri could not be able to become a "referee" in the political battles. And Indonesia's political history, since the 1998 reform, has not always been straight and smooth. Political elites who are fighting for electoral victory and constituency, will always try to attract those who have power. Police have two powers at once, have weapons and law. Both, can be a means of pressure for them. Luckily, the Police position is always in the middle, not siding with any political parties. This has been proven and tested in five general elections since the 1998 reformation, four of which were direct presidential elections. The political temptations, is always ignored by the Police, and they stood firm in becoming the guardians of the democratic nations. This was proved in the 2019 General Election and Presidential Election which are considered the most difficult because there are two sides at odds with each other. The management of political conflict, which some countries are struggling with, has proven to be a factor in the failure of the state if dealt badly. Syria and countries in the Middle East are real examples, political conflicts have made their people suffer so much. Because of that, the Police have become more vigilant in upholding their duty. Facing the 2024 General Election, Polri has anticipated the threat of polarization due to the struggle of the two sides amid the community. This anticipation should not be underestimated, it is proven by a recent Kompas R&D survey that the threat of polarization is still high. The residue of democracy, in the form of polarization, must be removed. Polri also specifically has prepared a task force, to anticipate any disturbances that might occur in that time, as conveyed by the Head of the Public Relations Division, Inspector General Dedi Prasetyo The Police have made progress in facing potential disturbances and threats. Measurable scientific principles are the basis of their strategies and action. In this way, there is a strong belief that the Police are getting more mature at the age of 76 years. Because the strength of the Police, Polri have become one of the binding factor for the unity of Indonesia. Hopefully what has been done by Indonesian Police personnel could encourage all people of the nation to work together in realizing this country to be a place where its safety is guaranteed and full of peace.
