inp.polri.go.id - Japan's ruling party coalition is predicted to win many parliamentary seats in Sunday's general election, two days after former prime minister Shinzo Abe was shot dead. NHK's quick count showed a landslide victory for Abe's party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which is also where PM Fumio Kishida belongs and his coalition partner, Komeito. Based on the quick count results referred by Reuters, the coalition of Japan's ruling parties is predicted to win up to 83 of the 125 seats in parliament. If this is correct, the ruling coalition will have more seats in parliament than before, which previously is at 69. This time, elections were held for the upper house of parliament, which actually did not have much effect on the government because the position of government was determined by the lower house. However, strong support in parliament can be a provision for Kishida to consolidate power to launch his agenda to recover Japan from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Although the official results were only announced on Monday (11/7), Kishida welcomed the prediction of his party's big win. "Currently, we are facing problems, including the corona virus, conflict in Ukraine, to inflation. Solidarity in the government and coalition parties is very vital," Kishida said. Japanese political analyst who is also a former LDP staff member, Shigenobu Tamura, believes that the party's big victory could not be separated from the influence of Abe's assassination. "(Abe's assassination increased support) in the most contested districts," Tamura said. Abe himself was shot while campaigning in Nara, Kei Sato. He died of severe bleeding, a few hours after the incident. "[Abe] was shot in an act of terrorism in the middle of our election campaign. We are continuing our election with the belief we must not succumb to terrorism or frighten of it. We must fight it," he said.
